Siliguri precedent

Siliguri precedent

We have to be very careful not to degenerate Srila Prabhupada’s legacy to mundane non-devotional level. There is a tendency to water things down due because people are more interested in nonsense, that in the real thing. For example, in the west, people are interested in Radhanath Swami’s butt raising mayavadi yoginis, or Indradyumna Swami’s shareable girls who dance at the front of harinam column.

In India, people are also interested in beautiful women, but it is still understood by many that such display is gross and and not spiritual at all. But if you want to milk money from stupid hindus, there is one magic word “Lord Siva”.

Therefore, when I saw that ISKCON Siliguri installed Siva Deity, I decided to write an email to Bhakti Purusottama Swami, who is GBC for Siliguri:

Dear Bhakti Purusottama Swami,

please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Some devotees informed me that there is a Siva Deity installed in ISKCON Siliguri temple. There are also pictures published on facebook.

You are GBC for ISKCON Siliguri together with Jayapataka Swami.

I am confused why would ISKCON temple install Siva Deity. Srila Prabhupada opened many temples in India, he never installed Siva Deity. Also, Srila Prabhupada never advised us in his writing to do such a thing. So, why would we do it?

Prabhupada mentioned couple of times that we can pray to demigods to bless is so that we can advance in Krishna consciousness, but he never encouraged to we worship anybody else except Krishna. This is like ABC of Krishna consciousness.

For me personally, this looks like a betrayal of Prabhupada’s mood to satisfy hindus who don’t have real understanding of Krishna consciousness.

I am planning to write an article on this issue on my website . This is an offer for you to explain your stance.

your servant, Hanuman das

Subject: ISKCON Siliguri - Siva Deity

Iskcon Siliguri is named as New Navadvip.
There is a concept of nine islands. According to important pastimes of Lord Gouranga in different islands different small temples are built with respective deities.

Like Kolodvip the deity of Varaha dev. is there in a small temple.
Modadruma dvip deity of Lord Rama chandra is there.
Srimant dvip deity of Parvati with Lord Jaganath is there.
In center Anterdvip Big temple with Panchatattav and Radha Krishna is there.
Same way in Rudra dvip there is Shiva linga as Lord Shiva is doing Goura Bhajan there in Rudra dvip.

Only deities in main temple are installed. No other deities in small temple around the big temple are installed as such.

This topic was discussed in Iskcon India bureau before these small temples are built and respective deities are placed there.

This what I know the histrory of these deities.

Your humble servant

Bhakti Purusottama Swami

So, Siva is not installed in the main temple, and Deities in surrounding temples are not installed? This is strange. Why put Deities which are not installed.

Anyway, one reason I think this is dangerous is that it creates dangerous precedent which can be used by other temples to do similar thing.
