Scary proposition of social acceptanceHanuman das
In the month of December, Mayapur will host scary horror seminar about leadership.
They even have introductory video where Bhakti Rasayana Sagar Swami says:
- We want Krishna consciousness to be socially acceptable.
- We want devotees to utilize government funding to introduce Krishna consciousness principles of spirituality on a very broad scale.
You can see those statements yourself:
This is very scary proposition and I will explain why.
Krishna consciousness will never be socially acceptable. Krishna consciousness means that you have value system which is not socially acceptable, namely Krishna conscious person considers that eating meat, intoxication and illicit sex is sinful. That line of thought will never be socially acceptable.
We will never be able to spread Krishna consciousness on very broad scale. Because Krishna consciousness is like a diamond. Not everybody is able to purchase diamonds. And government funding is not available for those who want to preach exactly opposite of the Kali-yuga nonsense mayavadi world views.
Prabhupāda: I am encouraged.
Interviewer: Encouraged? Why?
Prabhupāda: Because so many devotees are coming daily.
Interviewer: So many? You say so many. You know, we have maybe, what, two dozen people sitting here. But of course there are…
Prabhupāda: We have got sixty centers.
Interviewer: …205 or 210 million Americans.
Prabhupāda: But you cannot, when you sell diamonds, you cannot expect everyone will purchase. There must be bona fide customer for diamond. You cannot expect diamond is sold among mass of people. You cannot expect it.
Which leaves us to the only possible choice of becoming socially acceptable. And that is to water down the process of Krishna consciousness. That is the only way to make it socially acceptable. Problem is, when you water down Krishna consciousness to make it socially acceptable, this is no longer Krishna consciousness.
This is not only idea of Bhakti Sagara Rasayana Swami, many ISKCON leaders want to make ISKCON “mainstream” and are willing to compromise our process by adding yoga seminars where girls raise their butt in the air. Since when is that Krishna consciousness?
As we become more and more mainstream, we will have to compromise more and more. And at the end, we will end up being totally useless sahajiyas.
There is a proverb, “Small is beautiful”. We should pass Krishna consciousness to the future generations exactly as we received it from Srila Prabhupada. Only then future generations will have ability to benefit from it. If we make it socially acceptable, that means we ruined the whole thing.
So, is there any hope of spreading Krishna consciousness on a mass scale? Yes, there is always hope, but only if we remain instruments dedicated to Srila Prabhupada:
The Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement has spread all over the world within a very short time (within five years), and mundane people are very astonished at this. However, by the grace of Lord Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu, we understand that everything is possible by the grace of Kṛṣṇa. Why does Kṛṣṇa have to take five years? In five days He can spread His name and fame all over the world like wildfire. Those who have faith in and devotion to Kṛṣṇa can understand that these things happen so wonderfully by the grace of Śrī Caitanya Mahāprabhu. We are simply the instruments. In the fierce Battle of Kurukṣetra, Arjuna was victorious within eighteen days simply because
Kṛṣṇa’s grace was on his side.
yatra yogeśvaraḥ kṛṣṇo
yatra pārtho dhanur-dharaḥ
tatra śrīr vijayo bhūtir
dhruvā nītir matir mama
“Wherever there is Kṛṣṇa, the master of all mystics, and wherever there is Arjuna, the supreme archer, there will also certainly be opulence, victory, extraordinary power and morality. That is my opinion.” (Bg. 18.78)
If the preachers in our Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement are sincere devotees of Kṛṣṇa, Kṛṣṇa will always be with them because He is very kind and favorable to all His devotees. Just as Arjuna and Kṛṣṇa were victorious in the Battle of Kurukṣetra, this Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement will surely emerge victorious if we but remain sincere devotees of the Lord and serve the Lord according to the advice of predecessors (the six Gosvāmīs and other devotees of the Lord). (CC Madhya 4.79p)
Srila Prabhupada clearly says that we must follow advice of predecessors, that is the way to please Krishna and remain a sincere devotee. In the context of ISKCON member, our main predecessor is Srila Prabhupada. Our top priority should be to strictly follow Srila Prabhupada, and the number of followers we will have depends on the mercy of Lord Krishna. We couldn’t care less if we are socially acceptable or not. What is the use of being socially acceptable in the society of cats and dogs?
