Hospitals – The final defeat

Hospitals – The final defeat

Continuing for my previous post called Ghost quote, Giriraja Swami provides the quote, I was not able to find it initially, because transcriber made a mistake and wrote “hopitals” and Giriraja Swami changed word “bed” to “beds”.

Now, I make my final argument, quoting direct order from Prabhupada for sannyasis not to mess with mundane welfare and comparing hospitals with gas stations.

Another clear supporter of hospital tattva nonsense is exposed.

Attached quote

Prahlāda Mahārāja said, bālasya neha śaraṇaṁ pitarau nṛsiṁha. Bālasya neha śaraṇaṁ pitarau nṛsiṁha na ārtasya. Ārtasya means diseased, suffering from some disease. Now, just like we have already explained, we are opening hopitals and bed… That is not. You can do it, but at the same time he must be Kṛṣṇa conscious. We have got practical examples. Some of our devotees, they go to the hospital, and they purchase our books and they become a devotee. Even in hospital bed they’re reading Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Bhagavad-gītā and taking benefit. That is real remedy. So after being cured, he’ll become a devotee. So this medicine is not cure. This literature is cure—Kṛṣṇa consciousness. That is real cure. Nārtasya cāgadam. And udanvati majjato nauḥ. Everyone is drowned, either you take figuratively or really. In the samudra, in the sea, ocean, there are always ojhs, (?) waves. So your tiny boat or big ship, that is not safe side. We have got experience. When I was going to New York on ship—I had no money to go by plane—so in the deep sea ocean, especially in the Atlantic Ocean, it was nothing, like a small ball, tottering like this. At any moment can be capsized. Although very big ship with very big load, but it is nothing in the sea. So that is not sure. There is no surety that because you are in a big ship you’ll be saved. No. In your country it happened, say, fifty, sixty years, the Titanic, or what is that? In the first voyage everything was drowned, all big, big men. So nature’s freak is so strong that you cannot say that “Because I have got a nice ship, I’ll be saved.” No, that is not possible. Without Kṛṣṇa’s protection, this, all these counteracting measures, will be all useless. Therefore teach people how to take shelter of Kṛṣṇa. 760226 – Lecture SB 07.09.19 – Mayapur

Dear Giriraja Swami,

please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

Thank you for the quote.

Prabhupada: “Now, just like we have already explained, we are opening hopitals and bed… That is not. You can do it, but at the same time he must be Kṛṣṇa conscious. We have got practical examples.”

Giriraja Swami quoting Prabhupada: “We are opening hospitals with beds. We may do that, but at the same time the patients must be Krsna conscious. We have practical examples.”

When Prabhupada says “we are opening hospitals”, that was spoken in 1976, at that time ISKCON didn’t open any hospitals neither devotees had any plans to open any hospitals. So, he was obviously not referring to ISKCON devotees or ISKCON mission.

If we look at the context, Prabhupada is very clear, he says “like we already explained”. That means he was already talking about hospitals is that same lecture, and he condemned those who open hospitals as “proud rascals” who don’t understand that real problem is birth, death old age and disease.

Furthermore, altough grhastas can work together in any type of enterprise, hospitals included, sannyasis should not promote and endorse such activities because there is nothing transcendental about them, this is clear instruction by Srila Prabhupada:

Śrīla Viśvanātha Cakravartī Ṭhākura remarks in this connection that if sannyāsīs (persons in the renounced order of life, who have left their homes for self-realization) do not engage themselves in the devotional service of the Lord but become attracted by philanthropic work, such as opening educational institutions, hospitals or even monasteries, churches or temples of demigods, they find only trouble from such engagements, not only in this life but in the next. Sannyāsīs who do not take advantage of this life to realize Kṛṣṇa simply waste their time and energy in activities outside the jurisdiction of the renounced order. A devotee’s attempt to engage his energies in such activities as constructing a Viṣṇu temple, however, is never wasted. Such engagements are called kṛṣṇārthe akhila-ceṣṭā, variegated activities performed to please Kṛṣṇa. (KB 87)

At the end, I would like to address your point that hospital will “serve devotees”. Devotees can be served in many ways, including opening gas stations and giving cheaper gas to devotees. I am quoting your last two paragraphs:

We also feel indebted to the devotees of the hospital for the great service they will render to other devotees. Although devotees do not identify with the body, they engage the body in the Lord’s service. So for the sake of Krsna’s service they take care of the body. Thus the hospital will serve the devotees and ultimately the Lord by affording devotees complete medical care in a spiritual atmosphere. Devotees from throughout the world may come and avail of the facilities.

We wish the Bhaktivedanta Hospital and all associated with it all success. May Srila Prabhupada, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and Sri Sri Radha and Krsna bless this great effort.

When you write such things regarding hospitals, then you would be obliged to also accept following two paragraphs:

We also feel indebted to the devotees of the Bhaktivedanta gas station for the great service they will render to other devotees. Although devotees do not identify with the body, they drive cars in the Lord’s service. So for the sake of Krsna’s service they take care of their cars. Thus the gas station will serve the devotees by giving cheap gas and ultimately the Lord by affording devotees complete car maintenance in a spiritual atmosphere. Devotees from other cities may come and get cheaper gas.

We wish the Bhaktivedanta gas station and all associated with it all success. May Srila Prabhupada, Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu, and Sri Sri Radha and Krsna bless this great gas station.

As you can see from this example, there is nothing transcendental about hospitals, giving devotees something cheap or free is ok, but asking Caitanya Mahaprabhu to bless gas station is little bit off. And hospitals and gas stations are on the same level.

I just want to say that there are growing number of devotees who are fed up with this hospital nonsense and will never accept hospital prema philosophy.

I will not bother you further with this issue since you are busy, but I was interested to know what is your stance.

your servant, Hanuman das

Conclusion

Radhanath baba is not alone in spreading the hospital nonsense. He could never do it alone. He has support of other senior members of this movement and thus ignorance prevails.
