Deep sleep – on the brink of non-existence

Deep sleep – on the brink of non-existence

In this article, we will discuss the connection between the soul and the body, once the body becomes frozen or inactivated.

A few weeks ago, I came downstairs for breakfast, and I saw my wife taking something out of a deep freeze. I was yellow like cheese, but it had a different texture, so I asked her: “What is this?” She replied: “It is kefir bacteria.” So I started wondering, inside each bacteria, there is a spirit soul, so, how it is possible that you can freeze them? Kefir can stay in a deep freeze for a long time. What happens with the soul? Well, when you remove kefir from the deep freeze, it comes back to life.

It turns out that bacteria don’t die when you freeze them, rather they enter into hibernation. So, as the body enters hibernation, what happens with the soul?

Srila Prabhupada confirms that the spirit soul is present in bacteria is proof that the soul is present:

Prabhupāda: So ant moves because there is soul; the bacteria moves there because there is soul. Similarly, the man moves because there is soul. An animal moves because there is soul. (Lectures: Discussions with Hayagriva dasa)

Of course, kefir bacteria are not the only the which can get hibernated. Recently, while my son was sick, he had to take probiotics, which are similar to kefir, but not frozen, they come in a capsule. And on the box, it said that there are a couple of billion of them in one capsule. 🤣 Now you can understand that human form is really rare.

Semen can be frozen also. And after being frozen for over 20 years, it can be used to impregnate a woman.

Plant seeds can last even longer, over 2000 years.

Some types of frogs can also be “almost frozen” for the whole winter.

So, what is happening with the spirit soul while their body is being frozen, or while they are being transferred to another body? At that time, the soul is in a state called susupti, or deep sleep. During that time, there are no dreams, it is a completely unconscious state. Srila Prabhupada writes:

Just as the child must have seen his father because the father places the child in the womb of the mother, similarly each soul has seen Krsna or the Supreme Father. But at that time the conditioned souls are resting in the condition called susupti which is exactly deep sleep without dream, or anesthetized state, therefore they do not remember being with Krsna when they wake up in the material world and become engaged in material affairs. (letter to Jagadish, Apr 25th 1070).

Spirit soul leaves when the body becomes broken, or no longer useful. But some bodies can withstand extreme conditions without being broken down. Therefore, spirit soul doesn’t leave the body in that case, rather it enters deep sleep or unconscious state.

The goal of life is to be forever awake in the service of the Supreme Personality of Godhead.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada, the greatest spiritual scientist, and philosopher for thousands of years to come.
