Definition of terms

IYS is abbreviation for “ISKCON Youth Services”. As you can see, one of the prominent disciples of Radhanath Swami, Gauranga das, is organising UPSC exams coaching. UPSC stands for “Union public service commission”, you can learn more about it in on their website. Those exams help people to enter government service.

IAS officers joining the Indian Administrative Service and work as key persons of central and state government bodies. IFS officers are joining the Foreign Service of India. They form the senior management officers of India’s foreign service and manage foreign relations of India. The work as Ambassador, or High Commissioners, Foreign Secretary, or work in the PMO or Ministry of External Affairs. IPS officers joining the Indian Police Service, and leads the police bodies in states and union territories. They work across ranks from assistant commissioner of police, to superintendent, to various commissioner ranks, to various directors, inspector generals and director generals.

Philosophical deviation

This is a typical mission drift. Mission of Hare Krishna movement is not to help people to become sudras in sinful, corrupt Indian government. This is best example what happens when you select wrong person to guide you in spiritual life. Radhanath Swami should know better.

Mission of Prabhupada’s movement is to give people knowledge how to re-establish our lost relationship with the Supreme.

As for the career and social organisation, Srila Prabhupada recommended to establish our own communities, where we can give example of simple living and high thinking. Simple living leaves us plenty of time for self realisation and associating with other devotees.

Srila Prabhupada never encouraged ISKCON brahmanas to organise seminars which will turn devotees in government sudras. There is plenty of such seminars already.

I am also wondering about the requirements. You have to follow 4 regulative principles to join this materialistic course? Why? When you get employment in Indian government, you will probably have boss who will eat meat and drink alcohol. So why the trouble? Why are we educating our future generation to be servants of materialistic, sinful people.

Morning Walk — April 9, 1976, Vrndavana:
Prabhupāda: India has no, had no such ideas. They are borrowing ideas. India’s idea is self-realization. Live very simple life—brāhmaṇa, kṣatriya, vaiśya, śūdra. The brāhmaṇas, they are living simple life, becoming very learned scholar, pure character, advanced in spiritual life—one class, ideal. And kṣatriyas, they are supposed to be the king. They distribute the land on nominal taxation, and the vaiśyas utilize the land for cultivation and cow-keeping, and the śūdras, they are engaged as weaver, blacksmith, goldsmith, mean other necessities of life. In this way the whole society is simplified, and the central point is how to become advanced in Kṛṣṇa consciousness by cooperation.

Room Conversation (Bullock Cart SKP) — September 12, 1976, Vrndavana:
Prabhupāda: If he simply becomes little sober that “I want to eat, I have to sleep, I want some sense enjoyment and defense. So if I can get easily in the village, why shall I go three hundred miles away? Just keep in mind the psychology. So that simple life will be possible if one is bhakta. Bhaktiḥ pareśānubhavo viraktir anyatra syāt (SB 11.2.42). Only by devotion. Not by otherwise. Not by artificial means, by manufacturing toilet. Only bhakti. If they get little attachment for Kṛṣṇa the questions will be solved automatically. And they will be happy. Undoubtedly. That is the Caitanya Mahāprabhu’s first instruction. Ceto-darpaṇa.

Radio Interview — July 27, 1976, London)
Prabhupāda: We have got many farms all over the world. They are living very happy. Have you got some pictures?
Jayatīrtha: Of the cows?
Prabhupāda: No, of our farms, farmland. Leading very simple life, in your country, in, I mean to say, America, Europe. Very simple life. Food grains and milk. You can prepare hundreds of nice preparations, full of vitamins, nutritious. And they do not know how to live civilized life.

By digging for water, even in the desert, we can produce food grains; when we produce food grains and vegetables, we can give protection to the cows; while giving protection to the cows, we can draw from them abundant quantities of milk; and by getting enough milk and combining it with food grains and vegetables, we can prepare hundreds of nectarean foods. We can happily eat this food and thus avoid industrial enterprises and joblessness. Agriculture and cow protection are the way to become sinless and thus be attracted to devotional service. Those who are sinful cannot be attracted by devotional service. (Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam 8.6.12)

Let be real

Not every member of Hare Krishna movement is ready to dedicate his life in helping to  build new varna-asrama civilisation. That is a fact. If somebody is attached to city living, he can stay in the city and reap the consequences of that decision, which includes 8 hours work time, 2-3 hours commuting, sadhana which is destroyed by karmi job, etc, kids which attend karmi school and so on.

In the same time, we can’t ignore what Prabhupada wanted and pretend that such instructions don’t exist.

There is nothing Krishna conscious about training people to become government sudras, that kind of training is already readily available in the society. Srila Prabhupada never gave instructions that full time members of the society are supposed to perform such education. Thus, it constitutes betrayal of Srila Prabhupada and the principles of Krishna consciousness.

Correct way to proceed with mission of spreading Krishna consciousness, is to form villages where devotees can fully establish Krishna consciousness lifestyle. Trying to change society by entering it within existing framework will not work, because we will always remain minority, with great risk of being assimilated in the materialistic society, and their value system. According to Rupa Goswami, “asat sanga tyagat” is the first principle of spiritual life, rejecting association of materialistic people.  It is not possible to live a fully Krishna conscious lifestyle in the urban environment, and Srila Prabhupada didn’t advise us in this direction.
