My letter to Dravida prabhu – Reasoning by “editors”

Dear Dravida prabhu,

please accept my humble obeisances.

All glories to Srila Prabhupada.

This morning somebody on facebook mentioned BG 12.2 purport change, I was going through http://bbtedit.com/changes and I didn’t find any explanation.

1972 edition: “For one in such Krsna consciousness there are no material activities because everything is done BY Krishna.”

Current version: “For one in such Krishna consciousness there are no material activities because everything is done FOR Krishna.”

In the manuscript, it is written “by Krishna”.

Although only one word is changed, meaning of the sentence is completely changed. Any insights?

your servant, Hanuman das

Dear All

Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada!

This revision was made in the 1983 Gita, first printing.

1) This is the part of the Gita where we don’t have any original mss. What we have as the “OT” is really a retyped edited ms.

2) Whereas the idea that “everything is done by Krsna” is sometimes stated by Prabhupada in certain contexts, the context here is not one of them. The rest of the purport talks of the devotee being constantly engaged with faith and devotion in serving Krsna. All this is activity for Krsna, not by Him. And the result of all this acitivity for Krsna is that such a devotee never performs material activities. This would appear to be the reasoning of the editor in concluding that “by Krsna” was a typo or a misedit. What follows are two examples of how “everything is done by Krsna” is used — basically nimitta-matram:

So our duty, persons who are Krsna consciousness, engaged in Krsna consciousness, they should always know that >>>everything is to be done by Krsna.<<< We cannot do anything without Krsna’s sanction. But still, we have to do our own duty. Not that, “Oh, Krsna will do everything. Therefore we shall not try for a storefront or we shall not go to see this man or… Krsna…” No! That is lethargy. You have to do your own duty. But result, depend on Krsna. This is Krsna conscious. You don’t be sorry if there is failure, you don’t be unhappy if there is success, uh, you don’t be too much, I mean to say, jubilant if there is success. >>>>Everything is done by Krsna.<<< This is the attitude of Krsna consciousness. They have to do their own duty. Never mind whether it is suffering or happiness. It doesn’t matter.

Prabhupada: That is not the right way. Krsna never said to Arjuna that “You haven’t got to fight. You sit down, I shall do everything.” He never said that. “You have to fight.” Nimitta-matram bhava savyasacin. “And the result is already created by Me, but you have to make a manifestation of fighting.” Just like our Krsna consciousness movement. Within eight or ten years we have developed so much. Is it humanly possible? It is Krsna’s plan. But Krsna says that “You go and preach. Take the credit.” Yes. It is His plan. Actually >>>>everything is done by Krsna.<<< He gives the credit to His devotee, that’s all. You know the history of the Detroit temple (laughs)?

Your servant,
Dravida dasa

Here is direct evidence that BBT editors are changing Gita beyond grammatical changes. And they are changing the Prabhupada’s Gita where Prabhupada preaches correct philosophy which is according to them in the “wrong context”. I must say that this “explanation” doesn’t sound convincing. I can say that in Krishna consciousness, there is no material activities because Krishna takes care of his devotee and provides him everything he needs. Example for this is Prahlada maharaja, although he was walking, bathing eating and doing all the activities which everyone else does, his consciousness was different, and everything was done by Krishna. Krishna took full care of him.

My video commentary

Gita comparison

I talk about these verses in the video:

All men areEveryone is forced to act helplessly according to the impulses born ofqualities he has acquired from the modes of material nature; therefore no one can refrain from doing something, not even for a moment. (BG 3.5)

On the other hand, he whif a sincere person tries to controls the active senses by the mind and engages his active organs in works of devotion, begins karma-yoga [in Kṛṣṇa consciousness] without attachment, he is by far superior. (BG 3.7)
